Richard Clemence, son of Thomas, married Sarah, daughter of John andSarah (Whipple) Smith, who died Oct. 14, 1725, he passing away Oct. 11,1723. Their children, according to the town records, were: Sarah, bornNov. 11, 1688; Mary, May 24, 1689; Ann, Dec. 11, 1690; Thomas, Aug. 6,1693; Abigail, Dec. 4, 1695; and Richard, July 19, 1698. It appears bythe father's will, dated Oct. 11, 1723, that Sarah married an Angell;Abigail, a Thornton, and that Mary, at the time of the making of thewill, was unmarried. The Clemence name has been perpetuated through oneor both of the sons of Richard Clemence, grandsons of the first Thomasand Elizabeth Clemence. Of these sons, Thomas Clemence came intopossession, by the will of his father, of the lands, tenements andmeadows in Providence on both sides of the Woonasquatucket river, whichmade up the homestead and other lands. II) Richard Clemence, son of Thomas and Elizabeth Clemence, was aresident of Providence, where he was a prosperous land owner and farmer.His name appears with considerable frequency in the land records.Richard Clemence married Sarah Smith, who died October 14, 1725, daughterof John and Sarah (Whipple) Smith. He died Oct. 11, 1723, and his will,dated January 2, 1721, was proved December 9, 1723. Richard and Sarah(Smith) Clemence were the parents of six children, of whom two were named Thomas and Richard. The descendants of ThomasClemence, the immigrant, trace their ancestry through these two.
