General Notes:
Surveyor; Elected legislator for Milton of the Republic of VermontLegislature, 1788
Aaron Jr. served as a patriot in Connecticut Militia in Captain DavidSmith's Co. from Plymouth.
Aaron Jr. sold his land and a dwelling in Plymouth, Connecticut Feb. 6,1779. The family business was surveying, so it is safe to say that AaronJr did remove to the Milton district in 1779 to do his work, well inadvance of the settlers (who began to arrive in 1782). Finally, theRevolutionary War Record for Vermont confirms Aaron Jr's presence fromearly 1780 through November 1781. It is as follows:
Although the land was chartered in 1763, settlers did not settle thereuntil after the Revolutionary War. The district of Milton was firstsettled by William Irish, Leonard Owen, Amos Mansfield, Absalom Taylorand Thomas Dewey in February, 1782. Aaron Mathews made moderator at thefirst proprietors meeting at Milton on May 7, 1789. -"History ofChittenden County, Vermont " -page 638
Town was organized Mar 25, 1788. Represented in the legislature the sameyears by Aaron Mathews Jr. who was also Justice of Peace. - VermontHistorical Gazetter, vol. p. 840, Milton, Vermont. Ths aspect whetherSenior or Junior was the elected representative has not been established. It is thought that Aaron Senior was not in the vicinity as a resident, and thus Aaron Junior was the member. A search was made in Vermont in2001, and it was confirmed that a Aaron Mathews was a sitting member andthat he was a Justice of the Peace. His vote was recorded and registered.
"In the Vermont State Papers vol. 3, he shows up in the records of votes, etc., but no Jr. or Sr. He was the Justice of the Peace for Milton aswell. Sylvia"

Original Request ================ Reference Code: RXPPFJK Requestor: John H. McDougall Young (jhqmy@sprint.ca) Patriot First Name: Aaron Patriot Last Name: Mathews/Matthews Jr. Birth: 23 Mar 1744 Plymouth, CT
War Time Residence: Plymouth CT & Milton, VT Spouse First Name: Hannah Tuttle Comments: Virkus in Vol 7 of his Compendium of First Families on p. 301shows his dates as 1744-1786.
Jacobus in his Families of Ancient New Haven, Vol. 5, p.1154 shows hisbirth date as above, 23 Mar 1744. Married 17 Jan 1765 to Hannah Tuttle inWallingford Twp, CT but no death date, yet on p. 1248 in additions andcorrections Jacobus says Smith was also Jacobus's printer in 1929. Thisis no guarantee that he was buried there. True, from the histories ofCamden (Annals and Recollection of Oneida County), an Aaron Matthews waspresent before the official founding of Camden, N.Y. in 1799, namely in1797. There is talk of an Aaron Matthews and his two sons erecting withothers, the frame of a sawmill.
The problem is Aaron Matthews Sr was still alive and did not die until 24Apr 1806 at age 84 in Plymouth, CT. This Matthews family had come fromPlymouth then removed to Milton, Vermont and various land deeds attest tothis fact. In fact the records show that an Aaron Matthews was elected alegislator for Milton for the Legislative Assembly of the Republic ofVermont in 1788, Vermont not becoming the 14th state until 1791. If AaronJr was dead in 1786 as Virkus states then it is Aaron Sr who sat in theVermont Legislature and also it was Aaron Sr who helped to settle Camden. An interesting point is the fact that Aaron Sr's wife Huldah Frisbie died27 Mar 1797 at Plymouth, CT freeing Aaron Sr to travel. With his wifedead, Aaron Sr. could easily have moved with his brothers, sons andnephews to Camden - there was a whole contingent Abner Matthews, LeviMatthews, David Matthews, Lyman Matthews, Rosetta Matthews with herhusband Ephraim Church and possibly a grandson Aaron Matthews (an AaronMatthews taught school for one or two winters about 1824 in Camden).
1802 - a land record in Utica states that Aaron and Hannah Mathews soldto Elisha Curtis.
In 1808, Aaron and Hannah Mathews sold land to Thomas Hart for $580.
Added facts: Aaron Sr served as sergeant in Capt Caleb Trowbridge'sCompany; Col. David Wooster (or Smith)'s Regiment at the siege of Boston;he was commissioned an 'Ensign'; Aaron Jr served in the CT Militia inCapt David Smith's Co from Plymouth, CT.
End of submission to DAR
Comment by John Young:
Virkus was wrong with his 1786 death date for Aaron Jr. The DAR indexshows 1813 in New York state, the year his wife died. In 1808, Aaron andHannah Mathews sold land to Thomas Hart for $580. By this time Aaron Srwas dead on 24 Apr 1806, so it gives credence to the DAR fact of death in1813., , , , , , Change Date: 4 OCT 2003
Served in the American Revolution, Surveyor
