Founder of the family in America, who is supposed to have come fromEssex, England, was a res ident of New haven, CT in 1641, being among thefirst to locate there, and remaining there un til his death.
Emigrated to the American colony of New Haven about 1638. May have beensent with the New Haven Colony founders at the behest of an olderbrother, Thomas, a Puritan minister and possible associate of JohnDavenport, one of the founders of New Haven. Sailed for New World in May,1637 on the "Hector" Samuel and Elizabeth Cleverly were allowed to marrySeptember, 1642 without their parent's permission even though underagebecause they had spoiled one another for everyone else due to their"filthy dalliance". They had been whipped in August 1642 after beingcaught in said "filthy dalliance", so marriage was probably a necessity.
"The Connecticut Nutmegger, Vol. 6, No. 4, March 1 74," The HotchkissFamily, pgs. 483-492: When Samuel Hotchkiss (Hodgkis, Hotchkis, etc.)...probably reached America on the ship "Hector" and settled as a young manin the New Haven Colony in 1638... Samuel's death could have been Dec.28, 1663. "Connecticut Vital Records, New Haven 1649-1850," pub. in 1917,g. 18, lists death of Samuel Hodgkis, Sr. Dec. 28, 1663. "Genealogies ofConnecticut Families," Vol. II, Gary Boyd Roberts, pg. 173: SamuelHodgkins was living at New Haven March 2, 1648 and died there, Dec. 28,1663. He married, Sept. 7, 1642, Elizabeth Caverly.
