Nelson Stoyell Hollingshead was first married to Mehitlable Thornton, Dec11, 1851 in the Endowment House at Salt Lake City, at the same time he was ordained to the Seventy's Quorum. They had eight children from 1852 to 1869. Also he married Elizabeth Evans 29 June 1861 & seal in the Endowment House by L.D.S. President Brigham Young. He was a worthy L.D.S.Church member married to Elizabeth (Evans) his second wife. They had seven children from 1862 to 1882. In the year of 1852 he was called to Salt Lake City by President Brigham Young to run a grist mill in Big Canyon Creek, Utah. His death was the result of an accident, he being injured with a runaway team of horses.
Minersville was settled in 1859 for the purpose of opening lead mines. Nelson S. Hollingshead built a grist mill on this site in 1871. It was operated by water diverted from the Minersville canal, through a neighteen inch water wheel. Corn and wheat were ground to supply the needs of the community. Salt brought from Parowan Lake also was ground. Abrahamand Stephen Hollingshead, Charlie Burke and a Mr. Musser worked in the mill. It was abandoned in 1895. An historic monument erected by the Daughter of Utah Pioneers of Minersville during their Centennial year, marks the building of the mill.
From the history of Nelson Stowell Hollingshead we read: He was called to be the wheelwright and miller when a company under George A. Smith left Salt Lake to settle in southern Utah. He settled in Parowan, where on May24, 1851, a mill site was chosen. A gristmill, sawmill and tannery were erected inside the fort. By fall the work was progressing and Nelson returned to the northern part of the Territory, where after his marriage he was asked to remain in Salt Lake City and work at his trade as millbuilder. He helped to erect a flour mill in the Big Cottonwood area, at President Young's request. Later he was called to build mills in SaltLake, Parowan, Panguitch, Greenville, Minersville, and other places.
