Heap is a township and ecclesiastical parish, formed out of Bury, in the South - Eastern division of the county, hundred of Salford, and Bury Union and county court district, 3 miles east from Bury, its nearest railway station. The township is nearly 2 miles long and 1½ broad between Bury and Heywood and includes the town of Heywood. Heap bridge, crosses the river Roch. There are places of worship for United Methodists and Unitarians; also services every Wednesday evening in St. James' school.The remainder of the churches, chapels and schools are to be found described under Heywood. Here are a very large paper and extensive woollen mills. The Earl of Derby is lord of the manor and principal landowner. The soil is sand; subsoil, clay. The chief crops are wheat,oats and potatoes. The acreage is Ð2,938; gross estimated rental,Ð65,513; rateable value, Ð56,492. The population in 1871 was 17,252 of which 16,697 are within the local board district of Heywood. The ecclesiastical district of St. James has a population of 7,611.
