John Savage was of English Aristicratic Descent, he was industrious andacquired 1207 acres of Land in America. He lived in Middletown,Connecticut, had 11 children and raised 9 of them, 2 having died ininfantcy, and lived to a good age. Of the 1207 acres of land, 441 acreswere on the east side of the Connecticut River. His family members havepresered an old blazon of arms which is identicalwith that of the arms ofsavage, of Rock Savage of Cheshire, England. There is also a familytradition of kinship to the titled Savages of Cheshire. Johns will issigned "John Sauidg" though it is written in the will as "Savedg". Hiswill and an inventory of his estate is filed with the Hartford Probaterecords. His estate had 85 acres and was valued at more than 480 pounds.

I John Savage of Middletown, in the County of Hartford, do make this mylast Will & Testament. I give to my wife Elizabeth Savage my dwellingHouse & Homelott with all the houses thereon, with all my Household Goods& all my stock of cattle & swine of all sorts, during her natural life;also my long Meadow Lott the use of it her lifetime & all the lands Ibought of Anthony Martin adjoining my Homelott & to that which wasAnthony Martins Homelott & to that which I gave to my son John by a deedof Guift, that is, for her lifetime. Incase my wife should see cause tochange her condition by marriage, that then neither my stock of cattle orhousehold goods shall be disposed of to any but my children. The first proven link with the Savage dynasty starts in the 16th centurywith a Thomas Savage who was recorded as a Yeoman of Newbold Pacy inWarwickshire (yeoman was a middle class farmer who owned his own land).Thomas's son John Savage marrieda Joan Smith in Moreton Morrell in 1543.Some time later he moved to Bishops Tachebrook Warwickshire, where hedied in 1594. His daughter Margaret married William Murcott.
The Savage family were a higher social than the Murcotts, but both weresignificant landholders in Warwickshire. Nearby in Worcestershire wereanother branch of the Savages. This family lived in Elmley CastleWorcestershire, the manor of Elmleywas given to Christopher Savage byKing Henry VIII in 1545 (demolished in 1960).
