William Heap ha 1 CONC d married Hannah Ward in England and together they had sail 1 CONC ed for America with a company of Saints; but Hannah died o 1 CONC f cholera when they reached New Orleans and was buried onth 1 CONC e banks of the Mississippi River. Later William married Bar 1 CONC bara and Mary Ward, both sisters of Hannah, who had left hi 1 CONC m three little sons to rear. They continued on their way t 1 CONC o the Valley, but having to wait over at Council Bluffs t 1 CONC o secure additional supplies, lengthened into two years. I 1 CONC t was there in a wagon box that George Heap was born to Wil 1 CONC liam and Mary 14 March 1850. The family joined thechurch and left their beautiful hom 1 CONC e in England to join the Mormons inUtah. Accordingly they s 1 CONC et sail from Liverpool, September, 1850 on theship North At 1 CONC lantic commanded by Captain Brown. After almost eight weeks 1 CONC of rough traveling they landed at New Orleans. From there t 1 CONC hey went toSt. Louis where they remained for several month 1 CONC s while preparations weremade for crossing the plains. 1 CONT 1 CONT They left St. Louis early Spring 1851 in the John Brown com 1 CONC pany. Therewere 60 wagons in all, which were divided up int 1 CONC o companies of ten. As itwas spring time they did not suffe 1 CONC r hardships as some of the lateremigrants, although it wa 1 CONC s a long, tedious journey and they had manydiscouraging exp 1 CONC eriences. Occasionally, a stop would be made to huntgame. O 1 CONC n one occasion father, in company with a Mr. Brown, was hun 1 CONC tingout some distance from camp when they came upon a grou 1 CONC p of boys fromcamp. His brother Mart, James and Tom Corbet 1 CONC t and some others had five orsix Sioux Indian boys, about t 1 CONC heir own age, in the creek trying to makethem wade down th 1 CONC e stream where it was quite deep. They made the boys gobac 1 CONC k to camp, let the Indian boys get out of the water and sta 1 CONC rted ontheir way again. However, they had not gone very fa 1 CONC r until they wereovertaken by a small group of Indians on h 1 CONC orseback who immediately beganfiring upon them--the bullet 1 CONC s whizzing by too close to be comfortable. The two men thoug 1 CONC ht they were surely doomed but run as fast as theycould. Th 1 CONC ey happened to be where there were numerous mounds of loose 1 CONC gravel and sand which were difficult for the Indians‘ ponie 1 CONC s to surmount. The Indians soon became discouraged and turne 1 CONC d back. They afterwardssupposed that they were shooting a 1 CONC t them more to frighten them thananything else; but at thi 1 CONC s time Indians were still hostile andtroublesome to the emi 1 CONC grants. 1 CONT 1 CONT Being a wheelwright, father’s time was pretty well taken u 1 CONC p in theevening helping the men fix their wagons and keepin 1 CONC g them in goodcondition. Often he was asked to do guard dut 1 CONC y, as well as his own work, which made it rather strenuous f 1 CONC or a boy just turning 16, who had neverbeen used to that ki 1 CONC nd of work. They arrived in Salt Lake Valley thelatter par 1 CONC t of September, 1851, just a year from the time they left t 1 CONC heirhome in England. 1 CONT 1 CONT --Nancy C. His death was the result of an accident, he beingi njur 1 CONC ed with a runaway team of horses. 1 CONT 1 CONT Minersville was settled in 1859 for the purpose of openin 1 CONC g lead mines. Nelson S. Hollingshead built a grist mill o 1 CONC n this site in 1871. It was operated by water diverted fro 1 CONC m the Minersville canal, through an eighteen inch water whe 1 CONC el. Corn and wheat were ground to supply the need sof the c 1 CONC ommunity. Salt brought from Parowan Lake also was ground. A 1 CONC braham and Stephen Hollingshead, Charlie Burke and a Mr. Mu 1 CONC sser worked in the mill. It was abandoned in 1895. .....Lin 1 CONC coln and Susan Camps Beaver County, Utah 1 CONT 1 CONT Minersville is located in Beaver County, Utah, 18 miles sou 1 CONC thwest from the city of Beaver. In the fall of 1858, Isaa 1 CONC c Grundy, Jesse N. Smith,Tarleton Lewis and William Barto 1 CONC n discovered lead northeast of Minersville. Specimens of th 1 CONC e ore were taken to President Brigham Young who called som 1 CONC e of the pioneers to open up the mines and locate a settlem 1 CONC ent. Minersville was first settled in 1859 and a ward of th 1 CONC eL.D.S. Church organized with Isaac Grundy as presiding Eld 1 CONC er. 1 CONT 1 CONT Nelson Stoyle Hollingshead settled in the town of Salem whe 1 CONC re he built one of the first grist mills. In 1851 he was ca 1 CONC lled to go as the millwright with a group that settled in P 1 CONC arowan, Iron County. In 1871 Mr.Hollingshead went to Miner 1 CONC sville where he erected a grist mill. One hundred feet of c 1 CONC anal was dug with pick and shovel and a dam one mile upstre 1 CONC am was built to divert the water to where it was needed. Th 1 CONC e center of a large log was hewn out with chisels and use 1 CONC d as a pipe for the water to run through. A waterwheel 18 i 1 CONC nches in a diameter turned themachinery, while huge stone 1 CONC s ground the grain into flour. The buildingwas a two-stor 1 CONC y structure, the bottom floor used for the mill and th eup 1 CONC per floor as the home of the Hollingshead family. 1 CONT 1 CONT Charles Allen Burke was the miller with James Musser as hel 1 CONC per. Farmers from nearby settlements brought their wheat t 1 CONC o be ground into flour. Salt was hauled from Parowan Lake b 1 CONC y Lloyd Cropper to the mill and ground for table use. Mr. H 1 CONC ollingshead was fatally injured in an accident April 16,188 1 CONC 4, after which his wife and children kept the mill runnin 1 CONC g for anumber of years; then traded it to Frank Clayton fo 1 CONC r ten acres of farmingland. Later the mill was used as a ba 1 CONC rn where thoroughbred horses were kept until about 1953. 1 CONT 1 CONT An historic monument erected by the Daughter of Utah Pionee 1 CONC rs ofMinersville during their Centennial year, marks the bu 1 CONC ilding of the mill. 1 CONT 1 CONT Minersville. In 1871, Nelson S. Hollingshead was called t 1 CONC o go to Minersville and build a gristmill. He willingly ans 1 CONC wered the call, and within a short time had dug 100 feet o 1 CONC f canal with pick and shovel. A damwas built about one mil 1 CONC e upstream in the Minersville Canal to convert thewater fo 1 CONC r the mill. The center of a huge log was hewn out with chis 1 CONC els and the log was used as a pipe for the water to run thr 1 CONC ough. The mill building was a two-story barnlike structure 1 CONC . Nelson moved his family from Parowan and they lived in th 1 CONC e top story of the building while their homewas being built 1 CONC . Charles Allen Burke was the first miller. Mr.Hollingshea 1 CONC d was fatally injured when the brakes of his wagon gave way 1 CONC . After his death, his wife and family kept the mill goin 1 CONC g for a number of years, and then traded it to Frank Clayto 1 CONC n for ten acres of land. 1 CONT 1 CONT In the spring of 1866 I, William Hyde, sold two-thirds inte 1 CONC rest of my carding machine and improvements in Logan to Tho 1 CONC mas E. Ricks and William Hendricks and entered into partner 1 CONC ship with them for the purpose of building a flour mill. W 1 CONC e commenced to dig the foundation and haul rock April 1st 1 CONC , and in eight months and 12 days the building was dedicate 1 CONC d andthe mill commenced to grind. The size of the buildin 1 CONC g was about 53 feetby 35 feet and was built of lime rock wh 1 CONC ich we hauled five miles. It costabout $2700. Our object wa 1 CONC s to build a substantial, good one that wouldbe a blessin 1 CONC g to the county and in this we have not failed. However, it 1 CONC has required a heavy exertion to build the mill but no mor 1 CONC e so than weshould naturally have expected. During the tim 1 CONC e of building the mill webought and sold about $2500 wort 1 CONC h of goods. We did a considerable amountof freighting to Vi 1 CONC rginia City, Montana Territory and to other parts.Presiden 1 CONC t Young rendered us assistance by lending us 400 sacks of f 1 CONC lourwhich we had stored in Logan. This flour kept us from b 1 CONC eing injured bythe firm of Ellis and Brothers, Jews, who we 1 CONC re designing to demand moneyin case the flour was not read 1 CONC y at a certain date. The flour from thePresident was a grea 1 CONC t relief to us in this time as it was hard to gethold of, a 1 CONC nd money was almost out of the question this season. 1 CONT 1 CONT In the summer of 1859, James Ellis and Benjamin Williams bu 1 CONC ilt a saw pitwhere the present building of the Thatcher Mil 1 CONC ling and Elevator Companyis located. They operated an uprig 1 CONC ht or whipsaw by hand during thatsummer and the winter of 1 1 CONC 860. Most of the logs were cut in Breen Canyonand hauled t 1 CONC o the Ellis and Williams Mill. The saw was operated by onem 1 CONC an standing above the log and another man under the log i 1 CONC n a pit and thesaw was drawn up and down through the log an 1 CONC d sawed into the properthickness. This was rather slow an 1 CONC d hard work. 1 CONT 1 CONT The settlers soon saw the possibilities of water power by b 1 CONC uilding acanal on the north rim of the river basin, so in t 1 CONC he early spring of1860, Hezekiah Thatcher, Joel Hicks, an 1 CONC d E. T. Benson started a canalknown as the Millrace, and to 1 CONC ok in the Little Logan River. This canal wasbrought along t 1 CONC he rim of the river basin to where the Ellis and WilliamsSa 1 CONC w Pit was and here a wooden wheel was installed and a sawmi 1 CONC ll andgristmill combined was constructed and used the sam 1 CONC e water power. Acircle saw was put in and the logs were saw 1 CONC ed much easier and faster thanwith a whipsaw. Later as a re 1 CONC sult of the building of the temple, thetabernacle, and othe 1 CONC r public buildings, several industries weredeveloped. A saw 1 CONC mill was built in Temple Fork in Logan Canyon and nearlyal 1 CONC l the lumber used in the construction of the temple was saw 1 CONC ed at thismill. Much lumber was sold besides and the procee 1 CONC ds went to help buildthe temple. A large lime kiln was als 1 CONC o constructed near the presentintake of the Utah Power an 1 CONC d Light Company in Logan Canyon and from itall the lime fo 1 CONC r the building of the temple and tabernacle was secured.I 1 CONC t also brought in considerable revenue by the sale of lim 1 CONC e elsewhere. 1 CONT 1 CONT The gristmill, built in 1860 in connection with the sawmill 1 CONC , was one ofthe first in the valley. In a short time the mi 1 CONC lling interest grew tosuch an extent that the sawmill had t 1 CONC o be abandoned and the flour millwas rebuilt on a much broa 1 CONC der scale on its present site in 1865 under thename of That 1 CONC cher and Sons Union Roller Mills ... With the development o 1 CONC fthe valley the demand for the flour of the Thatcher and So 1 CONC ns Union RollerMill became so great that in 1879 it was ove 1 CONC rhauled and refittedthroughout with entirely new machiner 1 CONC y and was still the best mill in thevalley. In 1885 the mar 1 CONC ket for the product was widened to such an unusualextent th 1 CONC at the mill was again remodeled at a great outlay, into a r 1 CONC ollermill and the millstones were discarded. In 1888 a larg 1 CONC e elevator with acapacity of 40,000 bushels was added. Thi 1 CONC s was one of the largestelevators in the territory at tha 1 CONC t time and was a great help to thefarmers as they could dis 1 CONC pose of their wheat when they needed the money. The mill ha 1 CONC d a daily capacity of 1100 barrels and its product was sol 1 CONC d inthe principal points of Utah. It is now known as the Th 1 CONC atcher Milling andElevator Company and is still one of th 1 CONC e leading flour mills of thestate. During the period aroun 1 CONC d 1888 this mill also sold extensively tomarkets of Idaho 1 CONC , Wyoming, Montana, Colorado, Nebraska, and Arizona. 1 CONT 1 CONT Due to the increasing demand for mill products, the Desere 1 CONC t Mill wasconstructed in 1868 by Thomas E. Ricks of Logan 1 CONC , and William Hendricks ofRichmond. At that time it was con 1 CONC sidered a very substantial building andlater was well equip 1 CONC ped with good machinery and had quite an extensivetrade. H 1 CONC . M. Harksen was the first miller and remained as miller fo 1 CONC r morethan twenty years. The building still remains and i 1 CONC s located on the LoganCanyon road between First and Secon 1 CONC d East streets. 1 CONT 1 CONT Charles O. Card, with others, also constructed one of the e 1 CONC arlygristmills and located it where the present building o 1 CONC f the CentralMilling and Elevator Company is. With the rapi 1 CONC d improvements made inmilling machinery and processes, thi 1 CONC s mill soon became obsolete and a newcompany known as the C 1 CONC entral Milling and Elevator Company was organizedwith Willi 1 CONC am R. Preston as president. A new building was erected an 1 CONC d theroller type of machines and other modern improvements 1 CONC , for those days, were installed. John R. Burns was the firs 1 CONC t miller and his mill productscommanded a ready sale.... 1 CONT 1 CONT From the history of Nelson Stowell Hollingshead we read: H 1 CONC e was called tobe the wheelwright and miller when a compan 1 CONC y under George A. Smith leftSalt Lake to settle in souther 1 CONC n Utah. He settled in Parowan, where on May24, 1851, a mil 1 CONC l site was chosen. A gristmill, sawmill and tannery wereere 1 CONC cted inside the fort. By fall the work was progressing an 1 CONC d Nelsonreturned to the northern part of the Territory, whe 1 CONC re after his marriagehe was asked to remain in Salt Lake Ci 1 CONC ty and work at his trade as millbuilder. He helped to erec 1 CONC t a flour mill in the Big Cottonwood area, atPresident Youn 1 CONC g's request. Later he was called to build mills in SaltLake 1 CONC , Parowan, Panguitch, Greenville, Minersville, and other pl 1 CONC aces. 1 CONT 1 CONT An improved flour mill was owned by President Smith and Joh 1 CONC n CalvinSmith. It stood inside the Old Fort in the southeas 1 CONC t corner. PresidentSmith hired Margaret Richards to make sa 1 CONC cks for the flour purchased bythe local stores. The burr mi 1 CONC ll furnished flour for this section of thecountry for man 1 CONC y years. After President George A. Smith left, hisdaughter 1 CONC , Mary A. Smith Wimmer and John C. L. Smith's widow, and Mr 1 CONC s.Sarah Fish S. McGregor became the owners of the mill. Abo 1 CONC ut 1894 or 1895the mill burned down. It happened at night a 1 CONC nd the flames lighted thewhole town. They never knew what s 1 CONC tarted the fire, but the bucket brigadedid their best to sa 1 CONC ve it. This was a great loss to the community; wheathad t 1 CONC o be hauled to Beaver to trade for flour. In 1897 they buil 1 CONC t a newforty-barrel flour roller mill at the mouth of the c 1 CONC anyon. The machinerycame from the George T. Smith Manufactu 1 CONC ring Company of Jackson, Michigan. 1 CONT 1 CONT Other mills built in Iron County were: one built by Josep 1 CONC h Walker; onecalled the Co-op Mill, built and dedicated Dec 1 CONC ember 17, 1876; anothernoted was the Chaffin Mill operate 1 CONC d by John D. Lee; Gordon Mathesonintroduced the first smal 1 CONC l electric gristmills in Southern Utah. 1 CONT 1 CONT Page: 001244 Name: Nelson Stoyell Hollingshead Gender: mal 1 CONC e Birth Date: 22 Sep 1824 Birth Place: York West, Toronto 1 CONC , Canada Parent1: Thomas William Hollingshead born 14 Jul 1 CONC y 1795 Digby Nova Scotia Parent2: Aurelia Matthews born 2 1 CONC 2 Oct 1802 Argentile Lower Canada Spouse: Mehetabel Thornto 1 CONC n;Elizabeth Evans Marriage Date: 17 Dec 1851;29 Jun 1861;ag 1 CONC e 17 Marriage Place: Great Salt Lake City, Utah Departure D 1 CONC ate: 31 Dec 1852 Party: Company 18 Capt John C.
