The family joined thechurch and left their beautiful hom 2 CONC e in England to join the Mormons inUtah. Accordingly they s 2 CONC et sail from Liverpool, September, 1850 on theship North At 2 CONC lantic commanded by Captain Brown. After almost eight weeks 2 CONC of rough traveling they landed at New Orleans. From there t 2 CONC hey went toSt. Louis where they remained for several month 2 CONC s while preparations weremade for crossing the plains. 2 CONT 2 CONT They left St. Louis early Spring 1851 in the John Brown com 2 CONC pany. Therewere 60 wagons in all, which were divided up int 2 CONC o companies of ten. As itwas spring time they did not suffe 2 CONC r hardships as some of the lateremigrants, although it wa 2 CONC s a long, tedious journey and they had manydiscouraging exp 2 CONC eriences. Occasionally, a stop would be made to huntgame. O 2 CONC n one occasion father, in company with a Mr. Brown, was hun 2 CONC tingout some distance from camp when they came upon a grou 2 CONC p of boys fromcamp. His brother Mart, James and Tom Corbet 2 CONC t and some others had five orsix Sioux Indian boys, about t 2 CONC heir own age, in the creek trying to makethem wade down th 2 CONC e stream where it was quite deep. They made the boys gobac 2 CONC k to camp, let the Indian boys get out of the water and sta 2 CONC rted ontheir way again. However, they had not gone very fa 2 CONC r until they wereovertaken by a small group of Indians on h 2 CONC orseback who immediately beganfiring upon them--the bullet 2 CONC s whizzing by too close to be comfortable. The two men thoug 2 CONC ht they were surely doomed but run as fast as theycould. Th 2 CONC ey happened to be where there were numerous mounds of loose 2 CONC gravel and sand which were difficult for the Indians‘ ponie 2 CONC s to surmount. The Indians soon became discouraged and turne 2 CONC d back. They afterwardssupposed that they were shooting a 2 CONC t them more to frighten them thananything else; but at thi 2 CONC s time Indians were still hostile andtroublesome to the emi 2 CONC grants. 2 CONT 2 CONT Being a wheelwright, father’s time was pretty well taken u 2 CONC p in theevening helping the men fix their wagons and keepin 2 CONC g them in goodcondition. Often he was asked to do guard dut 2 CONC y, as well as his own work, which made it rather strenuous f 2 CONC or a boy just turning 16, who had neverbeen used to that ki 2 CONC nd of work. We co 2 CONC mmenced to dig the foundation and haul rockApril 1st, and i 2 CONC n eight months and 12 days the building was dedicated andth 2 CONC e mill commenced to grind. The size of the building was abo 2 CONC ut 53 feetby 35 feet and was built of lime rock which we ha 2 CONC uled five miles. It costabout $2700. Our object was to buil 2 CONC d a substantial, good one that wouldbe a blessing to the co 2 CONC unty and in this we have not failed. However, ithas require 2 CONC d a heavy exertion to build the mill but no more so than we 2 CONC should naturally have expected. During the time of buildin 2 CONC g the mill webought and sold about $2500 worth of goods. W 2 CONC e did a considerable amountof freighting to Virginia City 2 CONC , Montana Territory and to other parts.President Young rend 2 CONC ered us assistance by lending us 400 sacks of flourwhich w 2 CONC e had stored in Logan. This flour kept us from being injure 2 CONC d bythe firm of Ellis and Brothers, Jews, who were designin 2 CONC g to demand moneyin case the flour was not ready at a certa 2 CONC in date. The flour from thePresident was a great relief t 2 CONC o us in this time as it was hard to gethold of, and money w 2 CONC as almost out of the question this season. 2 CONT 2 CONT In the summer of 1859, James Ellis and Benjamin Williams bu 2 CONC ilt a saw pitwhere the present building of the Thatcher Mil 2 CONC ling and Elevator Companyis located. They operated an uprig 2 CONC ht or whipsaw by hand during thatsummer and the winter of 1 2 CONC 860. Most of the logs were cut in Breen Canyonand hauled t 2 CONC o the Ellis and Williams Mill. The saw was operated by onem 2 CONC an standing above the log and another man under the log i 2 CONC n a pit and thesaw was drawn up and down through the log an 2 CONC d sawed into the properthickness. This was rather slow an 2 CONC d hard work. 2 CONT 2 CONT The settlers soon saw the possibilities of water power by b 2 CONC uilding acanal on the north rim of the river basin, so in t 2 CONC he early spring of1860, Hezekiah Thatcher, Joel Hicks, an 2 CONC d E. T. Benson started a canalknown as the Millrace, and to 2 CONC ok in the Little Logan River. This canal wasbrought along t 2 CONC he rim of the river basin to where the Ellis and WilliamsSa 2 CONC w Pit was and here a wooden wheel was installed and a sawmi 2 CONC ll andgristmill combined was constructed and used the sam 2 CONC e water power. Acircle saw was put in and the logs were saw 2 CONC ed much easier and faster thanwith a whipsaw. Later as a re 2 CONC sult of the building of the temple, thetabernacle, and othe 2 CONC r public buildings, several industries weredeveloped. A saw 2 CONC mill was built in Temple Fork in Logan Canyon and nearlyal 2 CONC l the lumber used in the construction of the temple was saw 2 CONC ed at thismill. In a short time the mi 2 CONC lling interest grew tosuch an extent that the sawmill had t 2 CONC o be abandoned and the flour millwas rebuilt on a much broa 2 CONC der scale on its present site in 1865 under thename of That 2 CONC cher and Sons Union Roller Mills ... With the development o 2 CONC fthe valley the demand for the flour of the Thatcher and So 2 CONC ns Union RollerMill became so great that in 1879 it was ove 2 CONC rhauled and refittedthroughout with entirely new machiner 2 CONC y and was still the best mill in thevalley. In 1885 the mar 2 CONC ket for the product was widened to such an unusualextent th 2 CONC at the mill was again remodeled at a great outlay, into a r 2 CONC ollermill and the millstones were discarded. In 1888 a larg 2 CONC e elevator with acapacity of 40,000 bushels was added. Thi 2 CONC s was one of the largestelevators in the territory at tha 2 CONC t time and was a great help to thefarmers as they could dis 2 CONC pose of their wheat when they needed the money. The mill ha 2 CONC d a daily capacity of 1100 barrels and its product was sol 2 CONC d inthe principal points of Utah. It is now known as the Th 2 CONC atcher Milling andElevator Company and is still one of th 2 CONC e leading flour mills of thestate. During the period aroun 2 CONC d 1888 this mill also sold extensively tomarkets of Idaho 2 CONC , Wyoming, Montana, Colorado, Nebraska, and Arizona. 2 CONT 2 CONT Due to the increasing demand for mill products, the Desere 2 CONC t Mill wasconstructed in 1868 by Thomas E. Ricks of Logan 2 CONC , and William Hendricks ofRichmond. At that time it was con 2 CONC sidered a very substantial building andlater was well equip 2 CONC ped with good machinery and had quite an extensivetrade. H 2 CONC . M. Harksen was the first miller and remained as miller fo 2 CONC r morethan twenty years. The building still remains and i 2 CONC s located on the LoganCanyon road between First and Secon 2 CONC d East streets. 2 CONT 2 CONT Charles O. Card, with others, also constructed one of the e 2 CONC arlygristmills and located it where the present building o 2 CONC f the CentralMilling and Elevator Company is. With the rapi 2 CONC d improvements made inmilling machinery and processes, thi 2 CONC s mill soon became obsolete and a newcompany known as the C 2 CONC entral Milling and Elevator Company was organizedwith Willi 2 CONC am R. Preston as president. A new building was erected an 2 CONC d theroller type of machines and other modern improvements 2 CONC , for those days, were installed. John R. Burns was the firs 2 CONC t miller and his mill productscommanded a ready sale.... 2 CONT 2 CONT From the history of Nelson Stowell Hollingshead we read: H 2 CONC e was called tobe the wheelwright and miller when a compan 2 CONC y under George A. Smith leftSalt Lake to settle in souther 2 CONC n Utah. He settled in Parowan, where on May24, 1851, a mil 2 CONC l site was chosen. Later he was called to build mills in SaltLake 2 CONC , Parowan, Panguitch, Greenville, Minersville, and other pl 2 CONC aces. 2 CONT 2 CONT An improved flour mill was owned by President Smith and Joh 2 CONC n CalvinSmith. It stood inside the Old Fort in the southeas 2 CONC t corner. PresidentSmith hired Margaret Richards to make sa 2 CONC cks for the flour purchased bythe local stores. The burr mi 2 CONC ll furnished flour for this section of thecountry for man 2 CONC y years. After President George A. Smith left, hisdaughter 2 CONC , Mary A. Smith Wimmer and John C. L. Smith's widow, and Mr 2 CONC s.Sarah Fish S. McGregor became the owners of the mill. Abo 2 CONC ut 1894 or 1895the mill burned down. It happened at night a 2 CONC nd the flames lighted thewhole town. They never knew what s 2 CONC tarted the fire, but the bucket brigadedid their best to sa 2 CONC ve it. This was a great loss to the community; wheathad t 2 CONC o be hauled to Beaver to trade for flour. In 1897 they buil 2 CONC t a newforty-barrel flour roller mill at the mouth of the c 2 CONC anyon.
